The owner says that at age 2, the once competition sheepherder developed arthritis in his right knee.
“He stopped coming up the stairs and didn’t want to do his walks or any playing.”
Then two years ago, Ben’s veterinarian at the Anaheim Hills Pet Clinic told the owner about a stem cell study.
The veterinarians were trying to find ways of alternating methods to control the pain and spread of arthritis.
The stem cells were taken from canine umbilical cords that the veterinarians said would otherwise have been thrown away. The stem cells are then directly injected into the joint.
It was then about three weeks later that a change was noticed in Ben. He started putting weight on his leg again and was running up the stairs again.
Animal Cell Therapies, the company behind previous studies, says about 70% of the dogs under 70 pounds that were injected with the stem cells showed improvement. But the results for larger dogs weren’t as good.
“We had mixed results in dogs over 70 pounds, so that’s why we’re looking at a new dose,” said Dr. Kathy Petrucci, CEO of Animal Cell Therapies.
There is now a new clinical research study underway to test out the new dosage.
