BSM Partners, a pet care research and consulting company, is launching a multi-faceted research project that will examine many aspects of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs, including the effect of grain-free and legume-rich diets. This includes original research related to cardiac function and the absorption and metabolism of amino acids in dogs eating diets that are grain-free and high in legumes.
The research team will include veterinarians, veterinary cardiologists, and animal nutritionists.
“The aim is to further our understanding of animal science and fill in the large gaps that currently exist in the scientific literature with respect to grain-free and legume-rich diets, and DCM,” said Renee Streeter, DVM, a board-certified veterinary nutritionist at BSM Partners. “We want to make sure that dog owners, the veterinary community, and the public are aware of the verified causes of DCM, which will ultimately lead to better health outcomes for our pets.”
A comprehensive literature review on the topic has already been approved for publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal, according to officials.
